Good news for Mumbaikars! The wait for the first phase of Mumbai Metro Line 3 is finally coming to an end. This underground corridor, stretching from Aarey to Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), is expected to be operational by April 2024 end.

Here’s what to know about this exciting development:

  • Faster Airport Travel: The metro will directly connect passengers to both domestic and international terminals of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA).
  • Reduced Travel Time: Travelling from Cuffe Parade to Aarey will take just one hour by metro, compared to nearly two hours by road!
  • Improved Connectivity: Line 3 will connect with other metro lines (including Line 1 at Marol), the Monorail, Suburban Rail, and ST Bus services. This integration is expected to significantly reduce congestion on suburban railways by an estimated 15%.
  • Wider Reach: The metro will provide access to key areas like Nariman Point, Cuffe Parade, BKC, and more, including areas currently underserved by suburban rail.
  • Enhanced Public Transport: Metro Line 3 aims to serve a staggering 17 lakh passengers daily, with high-frequency trains and a capacity of around 2,500 passengers per trip.

This 1st phase is a major step towards the completion of Mumbai’s first fully underground metro line. It promises to revolutionize the city’s transportation system, offering a faster, more reliable, and convenient travel experience for Mumbaikars.

Beyond the business hubs, the metro will also connect you to everyday destinations. This includes over 30 schools and colleges, 13 hospitals, and numerous religious and recreational spots. Plus, it’ll bring convenient access to areas like Kalbadevi, Girgaon, and Worli, previously lacking easy connection by suburban rail. The metro will work seamlessly with other trains and buses (Monorail, Suburban Rail, ST Bus) making travel across Mumbai even easier. It’s expected to free up space on crowded suburban trains by 15%!
